Aseel Abuzeid

PhD candidate at UiS

I am a PhD Candidate at the University of Stavanger. I find interest in sociological questions around immigration, integration, the experiences of minorities, welfare states, ethnic inequality and qualitative methods. In my Masters I compared two generations of immigrant women's experiences with the balance of work and family life in Norway. My PhD is connected to the project "Documenting immigrant voices of the past and present: a memory bank for the future", a migration-related project where I explore what it being a minority in Norway entails by collecting and analyzing life stories from immigrants in Norway. The aim of the project is to create a memory bank that documents life experiences, memories and voices from different immigrant environments, ages, backgrounds and time periods. I explore what the immigrants' life experiences tell us about Norwegian society from a minority-perspective, and with a particular focus on experiences, challenges, contributions and support systems.

The project has the lived experiences of immigrants as the main focus. We ask: how was it and how is it to be an immigrant in Norway? What do their experiences tell us about Norwegian society from minority-perspectives? In this migration-related project, life stories and memories from immigrants who have moved to Norway are collected and stored in a memory bank that serves as a platform for immigrants’ voices. These stories will belong to people from various immigrant communities, ages, backgrounds and time periods. We nuance the picture by aiming to capture the personal, rich and multifaceted lived experiences of migration. We employ diverse methods spanning from traditional interviews to digital methods such as photovoice and testimonios, and thus explore innovative ways of conducting research and extracting meaning. The lived experiences will be digitalized and archived in a digital memory bank. The memory bank therefore offers to become a valuable digital tool for future research as a source available for everyone online.
