Jo Fosby Jaavall

PhD candidate, University of Oslo

My project is centred on establishing how family dynamics are transformed by digital media platforms, alongside how this affects adolescent psychological needs satisfaction. The goals are to establish whether there are platform-specific effects in media mediation, how adolescents and parents understand the developments of media mediation in the family, and how such mediation affects the relationship between adolescents and their parents. My research interests are media platforms, media mediation, family relationships, and youth research. I am a PhD candidate with the research group Living and Learning in the Digital Age at the University of Oslo. I am also a part of the research project "Platforming Families: Tracing digital transformations in everyday life across generations".

The purpose of my PhD project is to explore digital mediation practices related to media platforms in the home, as seen from the perspective of adolescents and parents in Norway. In this there is a focus on how families are changed in lieu of the digitalization of sociaty and family life. The goal is to better understand the effects and developments of digital mediation practices, how we better can understand modern media platforms, adolescent psychological needs satisfaction, and adolescent-parent relationships in modern families. As such the project is located in the intersection between media mediation research, motivational and personality psychology, and finally youth and family research. The project employs explanatory sequential mixed methods design, alongside structural equation modelling, thereby allowing for the in-depth exploration of the relationships between variables and predictions on their effects.
