Marie Støren Jareid
Ph. D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Oslo
Marie Jareid is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Oslo as part of the research initiative The Digital Society financed by Østfold University College. The Ph.D. research on political influence on social media with a particular focus on state-led influencing efforts. It aims to explore actors, techniques, and societal effects of such efforts. She holds a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Oslo, has studied at the Police Academy in The Netherlands, and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science. Her research interests include social control, propaganda and persuasion, social behavior, and power relations.
Tell us about your project!
The project looks at the challenge of political influence on social media, political propaganda/disinformation, and primarily three different aspects of this as it plays out on the rapidly growing platform TikTok. The first is the prevalence of vertical and horizontal propaganda, secondly, the propaganda narrative techniques, and thirdly, the affordances of the platform as tools for influence.
