Postdoctoral research fellow at NTNU
Olga Usachova is a postdoctoral research fellow in Science and Technology Studies at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). I obtained a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Padua, Italy. My current research project delves into the complexities of energy transition, specifically examining it through the lens of cybersecurity expertise in the development of smart grids in Norway. As the energy sector undergoes a significant transformation toward more sustainable and renewable energy sources, the integration of smart technologies introduces new challenges, particularly in the realm of cybersecurity. My work seeks to understand how these technological advancements can be secured against cyber threats and how cybersecurity practices are being shaped within the context of Norway's energy transition.

Critical infrastructure, particularly power utilities, including gas and water, remains an attractive target for malicious cyber activity. The incidence of cyberattacks within electricity sector is on the rise, as highlighted by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Similar to various other industries, electricity sector is increasingly embracing digital technologies to enhance the management of plants, grids, and overall business operations. This adoption seeks to fortify energy security by improving the quality of supply, providing additional services to customers, and facilitating clean energy transitions through the integration of distributed energy resources.
My research project examines practical collaborations and negotiations between diverse groups of professionals involved in the development of smart grids in Norway. It does so by looking at cybersecurity domain engaging engineers, cybersecurity specialists and ordinary energy facilities workers, each with own concerns, quality demands and notions of expertise.
