Grut is a PhD-candiate working on the Norwegian Research Council research project Photofake. He research new, technical camera-based practices, their potential for disinformation and implications for civic engagement and democracy. He has worked extensively with new and emerging forms of media media over the last decade, especially user generated content (UGC) and its role and use in news media. In 2021 Gyldendal Akademisk published his book on digital source criticism.
